As the offspring of a human and a vampire, Renesmee Cullen was always going to be special. But the genes she inherited from her mother, Bella Swan, and her father, Edward Cullen, made the child truly unique. And here, we reveal some of the most unusual details about the Twilight character.
20. She has a combination of her parents’ powers
Throughout the Twilight saga, we see the supernatural powers that members of the Cullen family possess. And in Edward’s case, he can read the minds of everyone around him – except for Bella, who is somehow insusceptible to this. So when the two characters had a child, her abilities reflected those of her parents.
Meanwhile, when Bella becomes a vampire, she is able to create a mental shield protecting her from the powers of other vampires. Meanwhile, Renesmee has telepathic powers too that allow her to transfer her memories to other people. She does this all through touch and favors communicating this way instead of talking.
19. She’s immune to Alice’s abilities
Because she is an extremely rare being as a half-human, half-vampire hybrid, Renesmee is immune to Alice Cullen’s powers of prediction. Alice is unable to see the future of a creature such as Edward and Bella’s daughter because she is not one herself. And it’s for this same reason that she can’t see the future of werewolves.
In fact, when Bella fell pregnant with Renesmee, Alice could no longer see her in her mind’s eye. So she called Bella in alarm to make sure that she was alright. Eventually, at the end of the saga, Alice was somehow able to see a vision of the future that contained Renesmee as an adult, with Jacob as her romantic partner.
18. The pregnancy nearly killed Bella
Bella realized that she was pregnant when she began suffering from some intense symptoms. And that was just the beginning – because the pregnancy was not normal by any means. For one thing, Renesmee developed very quickly in the womb and the difficult pregnancy progressed at a startling speed because of it.
When Renesmee would kick, it caused Bella enormous pain and at one point, the baby even broke Bella’s ribs. So it’s no surprise that Edward was concerned about Bella, especially as he knew that other human women had died while expecting the child of a vampire. And he was right to be worried – because his wife nearly suffered the same fate.
17. Renesmee could communicate with her father from the womb
To say that Edward wasn’t pleased about Bella’s pregnancy at first would be an understatement. He even grew to detest his offspring because she was hurting her mom. However, that all changed when he heard what Renesmee was thinking from the womb due to his mind-reading powers and her mom’s telepathy.
Thanks to their respective abilities, they could communicate before the little girl was born. Renesmee made it clear that she was only injuring her mother because she wasn’t able control her strength and Edward helped her to keep this in check. It didn’t take long before he realized that she loved Bella – and he loved his daughter in return.
16. She made Bella crave blood
Bella wasn’t a vampire when she was pregnant with Renesmee. But even then, the child growing inside her made her act like one in some ways. For example, her body did not want human food despite the fact that she was growing ill – and that’s because the baby made her crave blood.
As a half-vampire, Renesmee had an appetite for blood. So Carlisle brought home some human blood that was donated at the hospital where he works. Although she wasn’t expecting to enjoy it, Bella liked both the smell of it and the way it tasted. It also helped her to feel better.
15. Edward helped deliver the baby – with his teeth
Renesmee came into the world sooner than expected and Carlisle and Esme weren’t there to help with the delivery. So Rosalie began an emergency C-section and ultimately couldn’t continue because she became overwhelmed with all the blood. In the end, Edward stepped in and had to use his teeth to open the amniotic sac.
And while Renesmee survived the traumatic birth, the strength and movements of the baby inside her combined with the impromptu procedure left Bella lifeless. When he didn’t think she was going to make it, Edward turned to his last resort. Indeed, he injected her with his venom to transform her into a vampire, thus saving her from death and making her immortal.
14. She can remember her own birth
Technically, Bella died during childbirth and was then reborn as a vampire when Edward changed her. So she probably doesn’t have any memories of the moment that her daughter came into the world. But in a surprising twist, it turned out that Renesmee could actually remember her own birth.
Although it may not be possible for a human, Renesmee developed a memory of the moment she was born. And she was later able to communicate this to Bella through her powers, allowing her mother to see it for herself. In particular, she remembered the moment that she first gazed into Bella’s eyes.
13. Jacob imprinted on her
As fans of Twilight know, the saga saw Bella get caught in a love triangle with Edward and her best friend, Jacob Black. And while she knew that Edward was the one she wanted to be with, Jacob will be forever connected to Renesmee. That’s because he imprinted on her.
Imprinting is when the Quileute shape shifters, or werewolves, discover their soulmates. Renesmee was a child when Jacob imprinted on her but this means that once she grows up, things will turn romantic between them. Bella was furious after she found out, but Jacob explained, “You become whatever she needs you to be, whether that’s a protector, or a lover, or a friend.”
12. She was originally played by an animatronic doll
Because Renesmee was so unique, filmmakers wanted her appearance to reflect that. So instead of casting a human to play her, they created an animatronic doll. The model was even used while shooting some scenes – until creators realized that it was too disturbing and reminiscent of the horror movie character, Chucky.
For this reason, the animatronic was dubbed “Chuckesmee.” Director Bill Condon told Entertainment Weekly in 2012, “Chuckesmee was a giant misfire on all fronts. Truly, it was one of the most grotesque things I’ve ever seen. It was a horror show.” In the end, the doll was swapped out for a real baby with CGI augmentation and eventually actress Mackenzie Foy took over.
11. She’s not venomous – and can sleep like a human
Renesmee was born with fangs – and the Cullens found that out when she started her time on Earth by biting her mother, Bella. However, she doesn’t have the venom that full vampires do within them and therefore would not be able to transform anyone into a vampire. This also means that she doesn’t have total healing powers.
Instead, Renesmee has some human abilities that are not associated with vampires. Unlike her parents, she sleeps at night and has a fast heartbeat. Renesmee also doesn’t sparkle when exposed to the sunlight like a vampire but merely glows, making it easier for her to blend in as a mortal.
10. She’s mentally advanced
As no ordinary girl, Renesmee did not grow up at the same rate as other children or have quite the same qualities. In fact, she never had mood swings and developed extremely rapidly. And just a couple of weeks after she was born, Edward and Bella’s daughter was able to walk and talk.
What’s more, Renesmee could pick up new things very quickly. As well as having a fantastic memory, it didn’t take long for her to be able to leap 15 feet high. And when Edward showed her a piece of music on the piano, she could learn it herself almost instantaneously.
9. Jacob almost killed her
When Renesmee was born, Jacob was convinced that there was no way Bella would ever recover. And believing his best friend had died, he set out to avenge her by killing her baby. After all, the werewolf – who loathed vampires – was certain that the child was some kind of monster.
Jacob tracked down Renesmee with the intention of ending her life. But then, he stared into her eyes – and everything changed. At that moment, Jacob could see his future with Renesmee and the person she would become as she grew up. And it was in that instant that he imprinted on her.
8. She doesn’t have a typical vampire diet
In the world of Twilight, the vampires drink human blood. But the Cullens call themselves vegetarians because they survive purely on animal blood as they believe it is more benevolent to kill animals. Meanwhile, vampires do not eat human food, which Bella learns when she first goes to the Cullen home.
However, because Renesmee is half-human, she can eat regular food. She also consumes animal blood and likes human blood best, which she can drink when Carlisle brings it home from the hospital where he works. But the mortal side of Bella and Edward’s daughter means she is able to resist her need for blood better than the other Cullens.
7. Her birth ended the feud between vampires and werewolves
Throughout the Twilight saga, fans are told about the feud between the vampires, who consume human blood, and the werewolves, who defend mortals against the former. The Cullens made a treaty with the Quileute tribe, promising not to harm people and to drink animal blood instead. But that didn’t mean they had a good relationship – and Jacob didn’t want Bella to be with Edward because he was a vampire.
So when Bella was turned into a vampire, that put her and Jacob’s relationship in a difficult place. But their rivalry ended following Renesmee’s birth. And as soon as Jacob imprinted on her, she was immediately placed under the protection of the tribe because the Quileute tradition means that no shape-shifter’s partner can be hurt. Therefore, Renesmee and Jacob’s relationship did a lot to improve werewolf and vampire relations.
6. Rosalie was like a second mother to her
From the start, Rosalie was the member of the Cullen family who was most dubious about Bella dating Edward. But when it came to the couple’s daughter, she was the most supportive. In fact, the majority of the clan were against the idea of Bella, a human, carrying the child of a vampire because of the risks involved.
However, Rosalie always hoped that she would become a mother during her human life. So when she learned that Bella was pregnant, she stood by her. Rosalie not only tried to deliver the baby herself, but also acted as a second mom to Renesmee after she was born.
5. The meaning behind her strange name
Renesmee gets her unusual name from her two grandmothers. The moniker is actually an amalgamation of Renée, the name of Bella’s mom, and Esme, the name of Edward’s adoptive mother. Similarly, Renesmee was given the middle name Carlie, referencing her grandfathers – Carlisle Cullen on Edward’s side and Charlie Swan, Bella’s father.
Interestingly, Renesmee was almost called something very different. That’s because Bella was certain she was having a boy and planned to name him EJ after Edward and Jacob. Her eventual name was considered too long-winded by Jacob, who nicknamed her Nessie instead. And though Bella despised the nickname at first, she ultimately came around to it.
4. She was the first female vampire-human hybrid
In Twilight, Renesmee is the very first female human and vampire hybrid on record. And although being half-immortal is extremely rare, it’s not entirely unprecedented. Alice tracks down Nahuel, a male who is half-human and half-vampire. Meanwhile, he helps the Cullens to gain some insight into the child – and ends up showing that she is not dangerous to other creatures of their kind.
When the powerful Volturi first caught wind of Renesmee’s existence, they believed she was a child who had been turned into a vampire. This is considered a serious crime and because of that, the they planned to give the Cullen family the ultimate punishment by destroying them – and Renesmee too. However, she calmly showed them how she came to be through her powers of touch and the Volturi retreated.
3. She will be fully grown at the age of seven
Because Renesmee develops at such an unusually quick rate, it is also revealed that she will be fully grown much faster than a human child. In fact, fans are told that she will reach total maturity at the age of seven. And there is some speculation about why this detail was added.
Some have suggested that this may have been included in the plot simply to make Renesmee’s relationship with Jacob more appropriate. And because she is only half-immortal, she won’t live forever like her vampire parents. However, she will have an abnormally long life, with a life span of many centuries.
2. She was given some important presents
When it came to Renesmee’s first Christmas, she was given some special gifts. Like her father, she is passionate about music, so Edward presented her with an MP3 player. And Jacob gave her a handmade Quileute bracelet, which is comparable to a promise ring and showed his dedication to her.
As for Bella, she gave Renesmee a gold locket containing family photos. The necklace was inscribed with the words “plus que ma propre vie,” which translated from French means “more than my own life.” Bella’s gift had special meaning and she presented it to Renesmee because she was afraid the Cullens wouldn’t survive the Volturi’s attack.
1. She may never meet her grandmother
After Renesmee was born, she became a valued member of the Cullen clan. But that doesn’t mean that she got to know every one of her relatives. In fact, it is never revealed whether or not Renesmee will meet Bella’s mother, Renée, who would undoubtedly be confused about why she develops at such a fast rate.
Renée has no idea that Bella has become a vampire, so the latter doesn’t introduce her mother to her daughter during Twilight. Renesmee does, however, meet Bella’s father, Charlie. While he is still kept in the dark about the fact his daughter is a vampire, he knows something is different about her. Renesmee was introduced as an adopted daughter, but it didn’t take him long to work out the truth.
