For years, rumors have circulated around Caitlyn Jenner and her relationship with Sophia Hutchins. Despite a 47-year age difference between the pair, there’s nonetheless been plenty of speculation that they were in fact a couple. And now Hutchins has finally revealed the true nature of her alleged romance with Jenner.
Jenner, who previously went by the name Bruce, rose to prominence as a decathlete. Her gold-winning performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympics saw her break the world record and propelled her into stardom. As a result, Jenner would soon become one of the country’s best-loved athletes.
Jenner subsequently capitalized on her newfound fame with a series of commercial deals. She memorably promoted Wheaties, for example, and also clocked up a number of TV engagements. Jenner even became a movie star, though the films she appeared in between the end of the 1970s and the start of the 2000s had limited success.
While Jenner was trying her hand at all kinds of professional opportunities, it was arguably her personal life that would bring her the most fame. In 1991 she married Kris Jenner, becoming stepfather to the Kardashian children: Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Robert Jr. The couple would also welcome two daughters into the world together: Kendall, in 1995, and Kylie, two years later.
The Kardashian-Jenner clan would, of course, go on to become household names thanks to the success of their reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. It launched during 2007. Jenner was a principal character in the popular series, which followed the daily lives of her large family.
However, Jenner took a step back from Keeping Up With the Kardashians following her divorce from Kris in 2014. Around that time, there were reports in the press that Jenner was shying away from the spotlight to focus on her various other interests. Nonetheless, she would reappear in the media during the spring of 2015, when she spoke exclusively to 20/20.
It was in this 20/20 conversation that Jenner first revealed publicly that she now identified as female. Indeed, she opened up about her transition, the use of hormone therapies and how she’d told her family of her experiences. Jenner subsequently introduced herself as Caitlyn on a now-iconic cover of Vanity Fair magazine in June 2015.
On the very same day that the Vanity Fair cover was released, Jenner also joined Twitter. In one of her first-ever tweets, posted in June 2015, she stated, “I’m so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. [I] can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.”
The first public event that Jenner attended following these revelations was the 2015 ESPY Awards, at which she was handed the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. While accepting the gong, Jenner highlighted the struggles facing young transgender individuals. She also announced her intention to use her fame in order to advocate for understanding and acceptance of transgender people.
Jenner then cemented her status as a transgender spokesperson with the launch of her reality show I Am Cait in mid-2015. The show focused primarily on Jenner as she dealt with her transition. The series continued for a couple of seasons and was largely celebrated by critics. Nonetheless, Jenner’s attempts to raise the profile of transgender issues have certainly been placed under the microscope.
In 2017 Jenner published a memoir entitled The Secrets of My Life. And it’s alleged that some of the content of the autobiography caused tension between Jenner and the Kardashian clan. Moreover, it was around this period that Jenner’s friendship with Sophia Hutchins became the subject of a number of newspaper articles.
Hutchins, who’s almost half a century Jenner’s junior, was brought up in Seattle, Washington, by her mom and her grandparents. Her grandfather worked as a Boeing rocket scientist and was able to pay for Hutchins to attend a top school. The debating champ would later move to California, where she attended Pepperdine University.
At that time, Hutchins identified as a homosexual male and hoped to get into the finance business after college. However, in her junior year, she suddenly stepped down from her post as class president. Weeks later, she revealed why she’d decided to take time out in a profile for the Pepperdine college publication The Graphic.
Revealing her intentions to transition, Hutchins told The Graphic, “I’ve always had the question of ‘Do I want to transition from male to female?’… I never thought a lot about doing it until I got into college because I was able to break away from my family and started to establish my own identity.”
But while Hutchins had been open about her decision to transition at the time, in 2019 she said she’d come to rue some of the comments she’d made while at college. Speaking of that The Graphic article during a 2019 interview with The New York Times, Hutchins stated, “Had I not done that interview, I never would have come out. I would just live my life. Now people can’t really see past the trans thing.”
Interestingly, though, Hutchins also name-checked Jenner in that very piece. She claimed that a couple of matters had encouraged her to take the decision to transition. The first was the backing she’d received from her family and pals. The second was Jenner’s raw 20/20 interview. And, amazingly, the two women’s paths were set to collide when Hutchins employed a make-up artist who also counted Jenner as a client at the time.
That make-up artist thought that Jenner and Hutchins would get on, so they introduced them. And it seems those matchmaking instincts were good. In her The New York Times interview, Hutchins said of that first meeting with Jenner: “Having a similar sense of humor, we spent the entire time laughing and ended up meeting for brunch, and we’ve been great friends ever since.”
At the time of her meeting with Jenner, Hutchins had decided against going into finance following college. Meanwhile, Jenner was without a manager after parting ways with her ex-wife, Kris. With that in mind, Hutchins spotted an opportunity for her and Jenner to go into business together.
Hutchins explained how she and Jenner became a team. “I saw nobody was managing her, and there were all these people taking massive advantage,” Hutchins recalled. “And I was saying, ‘Caitlyn, if I don’t step in here and start managing you, you’re going to go broke.’”
Soon, Hutchins had been appointed as Jenner’s business manager, and she even started living in the reality star’s Malibu home. When their friendship became common knowledge in 2017, the pair were described as simply being “gal pals.” However, rumors that they were in fact more than friends subsequently began to emerge.
Much of this speculation about Hutchins and Jenner’s relationship focused on how often the pair hung out. They went on vacation together, for example, and appeared side by side at premieres. Moreover, Hutchins flew across the world to meet Jenner when she completed her stint in the jungle as part of the British TV show I’m A Celebrity… Get me Out of Here in 2019.
There was much made in the press of the large age gap between Hutchins and Jenner. Some stories alleged that Jenner was dating someone younger than her daughter Kendall, who’s a year older than Hutchins. Other reports even claimed that the pair were engaged and wanted to tie the knot at the residence they were sharing in Malibu.
Moreover, initially some of Hutchins’ actions did seem to hint at a romantic relationship between her and Jenner. On social media, she shared photos that appeared to have been taken in Jenner’s bedroom. And in a Q&A session on Instagram, Hutchins coyly revealed that she was in a relationship when asked by a fan – but neglected to name who with.
Later, however, both Hutchins and Jenner both frequently stated that their relationship wasn’t a romantic one. And early in 2019 a source said to be close to the pair told People magazine, “They are not romantic but are best friends and are generally inseparable.” Nevertheless, despite assertions that their relationship was strictly platonic, the rumors regarding Hutchins’ and Jenner’s love lives persisted.
Eventually, in an effort to end the rumors about their relationship status, Hutchins made an explicit statement about whether or not she and Jenner had ever dated. Speaking to The New York Times, Hutchins said she’d previously declined to confirm or deny the gossip as a matter of principle. But by late 2019, she clearly felt that the time had come to finally speak out.
In the interview, Hutchins was asked what she felt the reason was for the rumors about her relationship with Jenner never having gone away. She responded, “Because we weren’t addressing it. I don’t feel a need to address my sex life, quite frankly, unless I want to.”
However, in this instance Hutchins did attempt to put the speculation about her love life to rest once and for all. She said that she and Jenner “were never romantically involved.” And in a statement subsequently released via a representative, Jenner seemed to support Hutchins’ version of events.
In the statement, Jenner mentioned nothing about a romantic relationship. On the contrary, she said, “Over the last few years, Sophia has been my best friend, family, and confidant. She is one of the top minds in her field. Her value in my life is undeniable. The sky is the limit with her entrepreneurial spirit.”
Although a romantic relationship with Jenner was off the cards, that didn’t mean Hutchins was single. In fact, in 2019 she told The New York Times that she was in a relationship with an unidentified man. That guy was a 30-something Ivy League graduate with a career in finance.
So, Hutchins had confirmed that she was dating someone else at the back end of 2019. Nonetheless, she was still answering questions about her relationship with Jenner into 2020. And during an interview with the Juicy Scoop podcast, while talking to host Heather McDonald, Hutchins reiterated that the pair had never been romantically involved.
Laying out the details of her relationship with Jenner as plainly as she could, in May 2020 Hutchins told the podcast, “It was never romantic. It was never sexual. It was very much friends.” And to underline her point, Hutchins also gave a brief description of her interactions with Jenner over the years.
Once again, Hutchins explained how she’d first encountered Jenner and then decided to live with the reality star after finishing college back in 2017. She explained that Jenner had been without a manager, so Hutchins had stepped in to assist with organizing that aspect of Jenner’s life. “That’s kind of the extent to our relationship,” Hutchins told Juicy Scoop.
In fact, clearly defining her friendship with Jenner as completely non-romantic, Hutchins went so far as to say that she shares a “parental” bond with Jenner. She claimed that she asks the former athlete – who has six biological children and four stepkids – whether she approves of the guys Hutchins dates.
Hutchins said of her relationship with Jenner, “It’s very parental, very protective. But, at the same time, it’s also business-y. It’s like we’re family.” She added that Jenner had provided her with a kind of support system in Malibu, as her relatives still reside in Washington. And putting the rumors to bed once and for all, Hutchins added, “As far as romance… no.”
What’s more, over the years Hutchins has formed bonds with some of the other members of the Kardashian–Jenner family. And this could perhaps be seen as proof of her familial bond with Jenner. For example, Hutchins has been seen hanging out with members of the famous clan when they’ve celebrated special occasions.
In fact, Hutchins revealed to The New York Times, “I’m on good terms with all the family, but I’m closest with Kris, Kim, Kylie and Kendall.” Hutchins even went so far as to call the women her “extended family.” However, she added that she wasn’t relying on them for any free publicity for her sunscreen brand.
All in all, though, it seemed that Hutchins had been accepted into the Kardashian-Jenner crew without an issue. Nonetheless, having such a close relationship with Jenner and her extended family hasn’t been without its problems. And that was particularly evident when it came to the pair’s living arrangements.
During her appearance on the Juicy Scoop podcast, Hutchins claimed that the “parental” bond she had with Jenner had provided some awkward moments in their shared home. Hutchins alleged that Jenner often came “barging” into her private space when Hutchins was entertaining guests, for instance.
Hutchins told the podcast that Jenner’s tendency to walk in on her had even forced Hutchins to reconsider their living arrangements. “[Jenner] kind of saw a lot of things happening, and so it’s kind of like living with your parents,” Hutchins explained. “I’m like, ‘Oh, this might be a turning point where I might need to move out.’”
So, it seems that, despite a vast number media stories suggesting otherwise, Hutchins and Jenner really are just friends. And while some of their fans may be disappointed that there’s nothing more to the relationship, it’s clear that the pair share a very special bond. Long may it continue.
