20 Moments When We Just Couldn’t Help But Love Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively

Ever since Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively got married in 2012, they’ve delighted the internet with their witty jibes at each other. Perhaps even better than that, though, is the depth of feeling in their words when they talk about their relationship. And with that in mind, here are the best moments between the two of them, both the hilarious and the sob-worthy.

20. First meetings

Reynolds and Lively actually met on the set of the 2011 superhero movie Green Lantern, where he played the title character and she took the female lead. The film was a critical and commercial disaster, but obviously one good thing came out of it – the couple’s marriage. But things didn’t start out so easy for Lively and Reynolds.

Indeed, in 2016 Reynolds posted a gif of his wife in a new killer shark movie, The Shallows, showing her being menaced by the dangerous fish. He wrote, “Actual footage from the first date with my wife. Tried to surprise her and totally forgot I was a… shark.” Perhaps it’s time for Reynolds to play a new superhero: Sharkman.

19. Friends first

If there’s one thing that’s obvious from every public Reynolds-Lively interaction, it’s that the two are great friends as well as husband and wife. And the latter knows this, too. Indeed, in 2016 Marie Claire asked her why she married Reynolds and the answer was simple. She said, “I knew he would always be my best friend for my whole life.”

“That was the biggest thing to me,” Lively continued. “I’d never known anything like the friendship that I had with him. I could like him as much as I loved him.” And isn’t that the foundation to all great relationships? Lively and Reynolds may make us laugh, but they’re also showing us all how it’s done.

18. The best revenge

Reynolds is quite a big proponent of revenge. For example, when a jilted girlfriend got back at her ex by Photoshopping the handsome actor into all their prom photos and posted it onto Twitter, Reynolds approved wholeheartedly. Indeed, he even suggested to the scorned woman that she also Photoshop him over the boyfriend’s yearbook picture.

However, in 2015 Reynolds was asked on Twitter, “What is the best way to get revenge?” And his response was simple, “Takes a long time to set up, but start a family with the person. Grow old together. They’ll never see it coming.” All in all, it was a strange but adorable way to declare love.

17. An unexpected third party

In 2015 Reynolds appeared alongside Helen Mirren in the film Woman in Gold. And for one brief moment it seemed almost like Lively had competition for her man. Indeed, she tweeted a picture of Reynolds staring into his co-star’s eyes, with the message, “Should I be concerned that my husband’s never looked at me this way?”

But in order to show there were no hard feelings, Lively tagged the post “#HelenMirrenIStheSexiestWomanAlive” and included a hashtag promoting the film. In fact, acting legend Mirren seems to appreciate Reynolds’s relationship with his beloved wife. In 2017 she wrote for Time that Reynolds was “kind, committed, [and] generous, especially to women.”

15. Reynolds’ Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony

Of course, the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony honoring Ryan Reynolds was going to be a hilarious one. It started off touchingly, however. The star said in his acceptance speech, “This is an incredible moment for me on so many levels. I want to thank my wife… who is sitting right there [and] who is everything to me.”

“You are the best thing – the best thing – that has ever happened to me,” Reynolds continued to Lively, before things took an unexpected turn. He added, “Second only to this star. It’s the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cut me some slack here. You make absolutely everything in my life better. You’ve given me two of the most incredible children that I could ever hoped to have.”

14. Valentine’s Day

Reynolds has over 29 million Instagram followers and he likes to make them laugh – even on Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year. For the day in 2018 he posted not a sweet picture of him and Lively, but a picture of himself holding food, announcing, “I baked this cake for my wife. The icing is glue, ‘cause I’m not a scientist.”

Anyone expecting something romantic the following day would have been disappointed too. Indeed, on February 15 Reynolds posted a picture of himself at the gym with the caption, “Ten minutes in to writing an email to my mom, when I realized there was no phone in my hand.” Lively then trolled him by suggesting both of them had turned to dating apps.

13. The wedding dress

Meanwhile, the 2012 wedding of Reynolds and Lively didn’t go entirely smoothly. They hired none other than Florence Welch to play at their reception, and as part of the performance the new bride and groom got sparklers. Unfortunately, Lively managed to drop hers on her bespoke Marchesa wedding dress.

Lively said to Vogue in 2014, “Later, my dress was hanging up and Reynolds said, ‘Isn’t that beautiful?’ I said, ‘What?’ And he pointed to the burn. My heart just stopped, because it was such a sensitive little subject. And he said, ‘You’ll always remember that moment with Florence singing and the sparklers.” Lively continued, “You have that forever, right there, preserved.’ Now that’s my favorite part of the dress.”

12. Birthday presents

What would you expect from your husband on your birthday? Flowers maybe, or chocolates, or dinner at a nice restaurant – but not if you’re Blake Lively. When it rolled around to her 30th birthday, her beloved husband posted a picture of him and her on the red carpet – with her mostly cropped out of the picture.

Luckily, Lively can give as good as she gets. So when her spouse’s 41st birthday came around, she posted her own picture on social media. It was of Ryan… Gosling. Indeed, the two actors had been pictured together at the Critics’ Choice Awards in 2016 and Lively had cropped her own husband out. Harsh, but hilarious.

11. The human Denny’s

Lively and Reynolds had their first child together, a baby girl named James, in December 2014. And parenthood was a rollercoaster ride for both of them, as it often is. Indeed, in February 2015 Reynolds appeared on David Letterman’s show and talked about their current experiences with his typical humor.

“As a guy, I’m just a diaper changing facility hooked up to a life support system,” Reynolds informed the host. “But my wife, she’s breakfast lunch and dinner. She’s a human Denny’s. All day long and all night long. She’s the most beautiful Denny’s you’ve ever seen though – I guarantee it.” Indeed, it was the most adorable human-restaurant metaphor ever.

10. Pie smuggling

Do you love someone so much you would smuggle apple pies across a border for them? Well, Ryan Reynolds does. And in January 2017 he revealed on The Graham Norton Show that he sneakily transported a bunch of pies from Canada to the U.S. just so Lively could get her hands on them.

Meanwhile, a customs officer nearly caught him, according to Reynolds himself. And what ensued was a veritable song and dance between the new dad and the security official. The actor explained, “He said, ‘You remember you did that movie Just Friends and at the end you sang ‘I Swear’? I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Go ahead’… I sang that thing in the best falsetto I had and I was on my way through the border eating pie by the next stop.” The things we do for love.

9. Labouring the point

Ask pretty much any woman who has a biological child: being in labor is hard. But it still makes good material for jokes, if you’re Ryan Reynolds that is. The actor cheerfully tweeted in 2017, “Being a dad isn’t just about eating a huge bag of gummy-bears as your wife gives birth. It means being comfortable with the word hero.”

However, Lively isn’t above making jokes about childbirth either. Back in 2015 for the first ever Father’s Day the family shared, she tweeted out a picture of Reynolds and the message, “Since the day our baby was born, I’ve felt so strongly in my heart that you were most likely the father.” Ouch!

8. A statement of love

In 2017 Reynolds and Lively were photographed for the Humans of New York Instagram page, and the former also shared some thoughts on his marriage and what he loved most about his wife. The actor said, “[Lively] meets anger with empathy. She meets hate with empathy. She’ll take the time to imagine what happened to a person when they were five or six years old.”

“And [Lively has] made me a more empathetic person,” Reynolds continued. “I had a very fractured relationship with my father. Before he died, she made me remember things I didn’t want to remember. She made me remember the good times.” Indeed, Reynolds’ father is the person the couple’s daughter is now named after.

7. The Deadpool obstacle

In 2016 Reynolds starred in the movie Deadpool, and the hilarious superhero flick was a massive success. There was just one problem: filming it took Reynolds away from precious time with Lively and their new baby.

Reynolds told AOL Build in 2015, “When I wrapped Deadpool five weeks ago, within an hour – I’m not joking, I still had chunks of glue from the scar makeup on my face – I was boarding a plane to Bangkok so I could get to my wife and baby right away.” Indeed, even though the film was hotly anticipated, family came first.

6. Time for a joke

In 2017 Reynolds was honored as one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People.” It was a big accomplishment, but that didn’t mean the Twitter jokes were going to stop. At the ceremony, Lively snapped a picture of Reynolds in the audience. But was it to celebrate her husband and his achievement? No, not really.

John Legend happened to be playing on stage when Lively photographed her husband. She wrote, “Congratulations to the most influential person in my life. The best man I know… you deserve this Time 100 honor. If only my husband wasn’t blocking you in this shot. I’m so sorry John Legend.”

5. A simple tweet

When Lively’s film A Simple Favor came out in 2018, Reynolds decided to throw some free promotion its way. So when she tweeted out the film’s trailer, he tweeted back to her the words, “You can tell me. We’re married. You once drove me to the hospital when you were giving birth. So… what the f*** happened to Emily?” Emily is Lively’s character in the film and the plot revolves around her disappearance.

As if the image of Lively having to drive Reynolds to the hospital while in labor herself wasn’t funny enough, the former dropped back into the conversation with another message for her husband. She wrote, “Oh darling, of all the secrets I’m keeping from you, this should be the LEAST of your concerns… trust me.”

4. The first date

Reynolds and Lively were just friends when they filmed Green Lantern together. Yet as time passed, things changed. First, they went on a double date, but not with each other. Reynolds told People in 2016, “About a year after Green Lantern had come and gone and we were both single we went on a double date – she was on a date with another guy and I was on a date with another girl.”

Yet the other guy and other girl lost out in the end. Reynolds recollected, “It was like the most awkward date for the respective parties because we were just like fireworks coming across.” But he was glad he and Lively were friends first, adding, “We were buddies for a long time, which I think is the best way to have a relationship.”

3. On each other’s love scenes

Lively doesn’t really like watching Reynolds do sex scenes for his movies, and Deadpool had some creative ones, to say the least. In 2016 Lively told Jimmy Fallon that watching her spouse do certain things for his art was “a cruel and unusual form of torture.” Reynolds himself doesn’t feel the same way, however.

In 2017 Elle magazine asked Reynolds how it felt to see Lively kiss other people. He responded, “I don’t mind that as much. I don’t mean that in a creepy way. What people don’t realize is, there are 50 or 60 tired, hungry, overworked crew members standing directly behind them. But the Deadpool one, I remember shooting it and thinking, ‘This is going to be tough playing in the headrest of every seat on a plane.’”

2. Making Lively laugh

Reynolds will freely admit that he can be self-deprecating in his humor, and this came to the forefront during the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, where he won Best Comedic Performance for his role in Deadpool. Naturally, the acceptance speech he gave – which was preceded by a performance of dancing Deadpools – was pretty hilarious as well.

First Reynolds noted that he was glad his rival Amy Schumer didn’t win, as “that would have been really weird with those dancers.” Then he thanked the Deadpool fans, of which there are plenty. Then he said, “I want to thank my wife… Everything I do is to make her laugh, especially the sex.” Maybe that was a little too self-deprecating, but it was still hilarious.

1. Reynolds on parenting

When Reynolds talked to David Letterman in 2015, he spoke beautifully about Lively – for a minute or so before gloriously ruining it. He said, “When we had that baby I felt more in love with my wife than I have ever been in my entire life. I couldn’t even believe it. I used to say to her, ‘I would take a bullet for you’ – ‘I could never love anything as much as I love you’ – I would say that to my wife.”

“And then the second I looked in to that baby’s eyes I knew in that exact moment that if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby,” Reynolds concluded. What?! Ah well, there’s still very clearly a lot of love hidden underneath all that silly humor.
