When Kate Beckinsale’s Ex Was Asked About Pete Davidson, He Had Some Eye-Opening Advice To Offer

In 2019 fans discovered that actress Kate Beckinsale and comedian Pete Davidson were dating. And when news broke of the romance, Beckinsale’s ex-boyfriend, Matt Rife, was asked to weigh in with his thoughts. But the advice that he had for Davidson might come as a surprise.

Beckinsale was born in London in July 1973 to actors Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe. But tragically, when she was five years old, her father passed away after a heart attack. And his death had a profound impact on the star, leading to her suffering from anorexia and requiring years of psychotherapy.

Meanwhile, Beckinsale’s rise to the top started when she began acting on stage while studying at Oxford University. Indeed, she not only appeared in theater productions, but she also landed a role in Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing during her first year. And ever since, her star has only continued to rise.

Beckinsale’s first major break in Hollywood came with a main role in 2001’s Pearl Harbor, opposite Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett. And she is also well-known for her performance as Selene in Underworld, which she first starred in in 2003 and later played the character in a further five movies from the saga.

But Underworld wasn’t just a big move for Beckinsale’s career – it also led to a shift in her personal life. That’s because it was where she met her future husband, Len Wiseman, who not only co-created the popular franchise but additionally directed the first two movies and produced the next three.

At the time that she first starred in Underworld, Beckinsale had been in an eight-year relationship with fellow actor and co-star Michael Sheen. And four years earlier, in 1999, the actress had welcomed their daughter, Lily Mo Sheen. But a year after she ended her romance with Sheen, Beckinsale and Wiseman tied the knot.

Beckinsale and Wiseman were married for 11 years, making it her longest public relationship to date. But it was revealed that they had separated in 2015 and Wiseman filed divorce papers the following year, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Since then, Beckinsale has had romances with Jack Whitehall, Matt Rife and now Pete Davidson.

Meanwhile, as well as Pearl Harbor and the Underworld movies, Beckinsale is known for her work in Snow Angels and Nothing But The Truth. More recently, she has starred in Love & Friendship and The Only Living Boy In New York. And in 2019 the actress began starring in television drama The Widow.

But as well as a resurgence into the spotlight, Beckinsale has been making waves because of her relationship with Pete Davidson. The standup comedian was born in New York City in November 1993. And like Beckinsale, he experienced hardship as a child, losing his firefighter father during the 9/11 terror attacks.

Davidson started his career on MTV shows and Comedy Central, before doing standup on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Then, he landed small roles in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Trainwreck. And it was his work on the latter that led to the biggest break in his career, after his co-star Bill Hader liked his work.

At just 20 years old, Davidson joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2014. Indeed, he was one of the youngest comedians to be on the sketch show as a regular and has appeared on the series ever since. And through his comedy and interviews, Davidson has been open about his Crohn’s disease and borderline personality disorder diagnosis over the years.

However, Davidson experienced media attention of a whole different level when he started dating Ariana Grande. Although they originally met in 2016 when she hosted Saturday Night Live, things didn’t turn romantic between them for another two years. Davidson and Grande were first linked after she attended a party for his show in May 2018.

Over the course of just a few weeks, Davidson and Grande’s relationship moved at lightning speed. And that June, they confirmed that they were engaged. However, they ended their engagement that October, only a few weeks after the death of Grande’s ex Mac Miller.

Davidson later confessed that he was struggling to deal with negativity during his relationship with Grande and after it ended. He even revealed that he had been “online bullied and in public by people for nine months.” And then, he sparked fears for his mental health when he apparently shared some concerning words on Instagram.

“I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore,” Davidson allegedly wrote on his Instagram account in December 2018. “I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer I can last. All I’ve ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so.” Indeed, these comments led to the comedian receiving a welfare check-up from the police.

Thankfully though, despite the difficult period, Davidson managed to move on. And he first sparked rumors of a romance with Beckinsale once they were seen together at a 2019 Golden Globe Awards after-party hosted by Netflix. According to People magazine, they spent the majority of the evening chatting to each other.

Meanwhile, Davidson and Beckinsale played down questions about whether or not they were dating. But it became clear that they were an item when they were seen leaving his standup show together in February 2019. The comic had performed at the Largo at the Coronet in West Hollywood, California, and left hand-in-hand with the actress.

Evidently, Beckinsale has a type. And it is no surprise that she has dated several comedians since her divorce from Wiseman – including Davidson, Rife and Whitehall. That’s because the actress has admitted that she believes a sense of humor is the most attractive quality you can find in a guy.

Indeed, at a party in New York City to promote her cover of DuJour magazine in February 2019, Beckinsale was asked to describe her ideal man. And she laughed before revealing what attracts her the most – and hinting at why she fell for Davidson. “Funny,” she said to Extra. “I like funny.”

But it wasn’t until the following month that Davidson and Beckinsale officially confirmed their relationship when they were pictured kissing while attending an ice hockey game together. The pictures soon went viral, and they were evidently seen by a lot of people, including one of Beckinsale’s exes.

Matt Rife is also a comedian and actor who hails from Ohio. And like Davidson, he has acted in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and appeared on Wild ’N Out for two years. In fact, it was on the MTV show that he once made a move on Zendaya Coleman and revealed he had a crush on her – although she was less than impressed.

For his part, Rife started performing standup comedy routines when he was just 15 years old and has gone on to join Dane Cook on his Tell It Like It Is tour. Interestingly, Rife previously admitted that the latter was his comedy inspiration.

And though Rife has evidently had success doing standup, he still hasn’t quit acting. Indeed, the comic has starred in Room 236 and Average Joe and will soon be seen in the horror film Black Pumpkin. But he’s also well-known for dating Beckinsale – and shared his thoughts on the latter after her kissing photos with Davidson came out.

TMZ approached Rife following one of his gigs at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, where he regularly performs standup. And he opened up about his time with Beckinsale, revealing that he met her at that same venue in March 2017, when he was 21 and she was 43.

Rife was quick to point out that Beckinsale doesn’t look her age. And he also hinted that their year-long relationship was not exactly plain sailing. He told TMZ, “We dated for a year and it was complicated for sure. [There were] a lot of ups and downs, but she’s moved on and I’m happy.”

Previously, media outlets had reported that Rife and Beckinsale’s relationship was far more short-lived than that. In fact, it was believed that they had only dated for a couple of months, rather than a year. But the comedian made it clear that things were more serious between them than most people realized.

While Rife divulged that he started dating Beckinsale in March of 2017, their relationship only became public knowledge three months later. At the time, they were pictured embracing during a date at the Sherman Oaks Galleria in Los Angeles. And their dalliance drew attention because of their large age difference.

However, it’s evident that Rife is not exactly pining over their failed romance. During their interview, the TMZ journalist asked the comedian if he would consider getting back with Beckinsale – supposing her relationship with Davidson doesn’t work out. Rife responded, without missing a beat, “No, absolutely not. No, not a chance.”

Indeed, Rife’s answer about rekindling things with Beckinsale may have come as a surprise. But his comments on her romance with Davidson were even more eye-opening. The comedian then confirmed that he had heard they were seeing each other and was asked what advice he had for his fellow comic about dating his ex-girlfriend.

After hesitating, Rife then admitted something shocking when asked about his words of wisdom for Davidson. The comedian said, “Man to man? Run.” It was a bold statement from Beckinsale’s former flame – but he then went on to expand upon his thoughts and insisted that he harbors no ill will towards the couple.

“Enjoy it while you can,” Rife continued. “I hope they’re both happy, I hope that it can build to where it’s an established, good relationship.” And he added of Beckinsale and Davidson, “I’m hoping that they… are getting out of it whatever they want to get out of it.”

And while Rife knows them both, he admitted that he had not been in touch with Beckinsale or Davidson recently. He added, “I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to her in a while. I haven’t spoken to Pete in probably the same amount of time, if not longer.”

Indeed, Rife’s words to TMZ hinted that he had some strong feelings surrounding his own former relationship with Beckinsale. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that he is against her dating Davidson. In fact, during the conversation, Rife went so far as share his good wishes for the pair’s future together.

“I wish them both the best. I hope they’re happy,” Rife said. Then, the star admitted that he doesn’t have any specific suggestions for how Davidson can make things last with Beckinsale, based on his own experiences of dating her. But he did encourage his fellow comedian to proceed with caution.

Rife continued, “I don’t really have any solid advice, just be careful.” And before ending his interview with TMZ, the comic confessed that he would never give his romance with Beckinsale another shot. However, he signed off with a message to the actress and Davidson, adding, “But best of luck to both of you.”

Meanwhile, Beckinsale has not responded to Rife’s comments about the time that they were dating – or her connection with Davidson. But it seems that not everyone feels the same way as the actress’ ex. In fact, the comedian’s former flame has made it clear that she is willing to get behind his romance with Beckinsale.

Indeed, Grande was approached about the pairing by TMZ while entering a building in February 2019. A cameraman asked the pop star, “Do you think Pete and Kate Beckinsale make a good couple?” And while she had already made her way inside by the time he had finished forming the question, she still replied.

Right away, Grande shouted her response – and let the world know that she supports Davidson in his new relationship. The singer said of the lovebird, “[They are] so cute.” And it’s not the first time Grande has shown that she does not have anything against the comedian, despite the fact that things did not work out between them.

In her hit song “Thank U, Next”, Grande revealed that she is “so thankful” for Davidson. And he returned the favor during Saturday Night Live in November 2018 after calling the break-up “nobody’s business.” The comedian said, “She’s a wonderful, strong person and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.”

Now, it looks like Davidson has found his own happiness. And in March 2019, he once again used Saturday Night Live to comment on his love life. Only this time, it was to reveal that age is nothing but a number when it comes to his romance with Beckinsale. He said, “People have a crazy fascination with our age difference. It doesn’t really bother us.”
