Orlando Bloom Shared A Poignant Tribute To His Grandma – And His Words Are Truly Heartbreaking

When Orlando Bloom gave his fans on Instagram a glance at his private life in October 2018, the images he posted were bittersweet. On the social media site, the actor had uploaded pictures of his elderly grandmother, Dorrie, in a hospital bed with him by her side. And the poignant snaps seemed to awaken a sadness in many people.

And Bloom’s family history is almost as fascinating as the movies that he makes. For a start, he was raised to believe that his stepfather was really his biological dad. Until the age of 13, he had thought that Harry Saul Bloom, the noted author, was his father – Harry had passed away when Bloom was still a young child.

However, Bloom’s biological father is actually one of Harry’s students, Colin Stone; appropriately, Stone was made Bloom’s guardian after Harry’s passing. And the star himself has been open about the situation with the media. “It’s an unusual story, but then you show me a family and I’ll show you an unusual story,” he told The Face magazine in 2003. Furthermore, Bloom still appears to have a good relationship with Stone.

It appears that Bloom appreciates other family members, too. On Mother’s Day 2017, for example, he posted a pic of his mother, former journalist Sonia Copeland Bloom, to Instagram in tribute. “Mum is an original [and] one of the most authentic people I know,” the actor wrote in accompaniment to the image.

However, in October 2018 Bloom posted a far more mournful tribute to a relative. His grandmother, Dorrie, was dying, according to the star, and so he had gone to her hospital bed to be with her, hold her hand and take pictures of them both. He also wrote a long post on Instagram about what his grandmother means to him.

“Cherish the memories and moments, and celebrate and respect the life,” Bloom wrote. “We all smile, we live, we laugh. And we embrace a grandmother, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a wife, a girlfriend, a daughter, a friend, a child [and] a newborn.” There were a handful of pictures alongside the message too – one of which shows Bloom kissing his grandmother’s hand.

Bloom added, “[She’s lived for] 98 years, and I’m so glad I got to be a part of them.” And he also recounted some of the cherished memories he had with his grandmother, explaining, “I shed a tear or two at the memories of Sunday lunch with Yorkshire pudding (she made it the best).”

The star concluded, touchingly, “I am so grateful for my grandma Dorrie. I love you.” And the moving note was enough to make anyone feel empathy. Indeed, plenty of people commented on the actor’s Instagram page not only to send their condolences, but also to share their own stories of loss. “This is a very important post for me. My grandmother passed away six weeks ago. I miss her so much,” one person wrote.

Model Helena Christensen – who back in 2004 was rumored to be dating Bloom – also left a comment. “My sweet, loving, beautiful grandma passed away at 100, and I miss her so, so much,” she wrote. “Every single day I think of her and my heart sighs, but I too am so grateful I had her in my life for so long. And I will cherish all the memories in my heart always.”

Bloom also left a message on his Instagram Stories. And the quotation from Buddhist writer Daisaku Ikeda may have given others further pause for thought. “No matter what the circumstances, you should never concede defeat. Never conclude that you’ve reached a dead end, that everything is finished. You possess a glorious future,” Ikeda’s words read.

“Life is eternal. We need to focus on the two existences of the present and the future and not get caught up in the past. We must always have the spirit to begin anew ‘from this moment,’ to initiate a new struggle each day,” the quotation concluded. And perhaps Bloom’s experience with Dorrie had inspired him to share those particular teachings.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry, Bloom’s girlfriend, also left a note for him on the social media site. “Love you, angel,” she said, commenting on the original Instagram post. Bloom and Perry have reportedly been dating since at least May 2016. And despite the pair having separated for a short time in 2017, they appeared to still be going strong into the following year.

It’s also worth noting that Bloom has his own little family. In 2010 he married Miranda Kerr, an Australian model whom he’d dated for a while. And although the marriage only lasted three years – the pair divorced in 2013 – the union resulted in a son, Flynn Christopher Bloom.

What’s more, Flynn was actually named as a tribute to Bloom’s other grandmother, Evelyn, who died before Flynn was born. “I was convinced we were going to have a girl because my grandmother actually passed when Flynn was conceived, and she was really dear to my heart,” Bloom explained on Live with Regis and Kelly in 2011. “And it was a boy. And so, Flynn! Evelyn, Flynn. Flynn, Evelyn.”

But even though Bloom and Kerr are divorced, things are apparently very amicable between them. “Orlando and I are literally like family. He’s like a brother to me,” Kerr told People in 2017. “It’s very weird, but we really care for each other and we have a great relationship, so I feel very lucky.”

Bloom’s relationship with Perry seemingly hadn’t put a dent in things, either. When People asked Kerr how Flynn dealt with her ex’s new girlfriend, she replied, “They’re great. They get along really well.” She had previously told the media that she and Bloom had established ground rules for familiarizing their son with potential step-parents.

And in 2017 Flynn actually did gain a step-parent, when Kerr married Snapchat mogul Evan Spiegel in May of that year. He would gain a half-brother, too, after Kerr gave birth to the couple’s first child, Hart, in May 2018. Rumor even has it that Bloom may be considering doing the same with Perry.

Fans know – again thanks to Instagram – that Bloom would like to have more children. The question as to whether he wanted to be a father again came up on an Instagram feature called Ask Me Anything, to which Bloom ultimately answered “Yes, I love being a dad.” There’s also speculation that Perry wishes to become a mom too.

An insider reportedly “close to” the pop star talked to Hollywood Life about Perry’s baby plans in July 2018. “Katy doesn’t want to make things very secret with Orlando Bloom. And if he wanted to marry her and have children, she would be all in,” they said. “She has jokingly said to friends she would be a baby-making machine for him, but it is something that is drenched in truth.”

And according to an anonymous source who spoke to Entertainment Tonight in October 2018, a proposal may be on the cards soon. “Katy always wanted a deep, long-lasting, loving relationship with Orlando, and Orlando’s mother wanted them to be together forever,” they said. If the pair do marry and have a child, then, perhaps they’ll use another grandmother’s name to pay tribute.
