Born in 1978 in Vancouver, Canada, real estate entrepreneur turned television personality Jonathan Scott has always had a solid work ethic. In fact, his insatiable drive helped him fulfill his dream of being a prominent figure in the entertainment business. His love life seemed to be going swimmingly in recent times as well, with talk of children, romantic holidays, and a plethora of cute social media posts clearly indicating his love for then-girlfriend Jacinta Kuznetsov. However, almost out of the blue, the two decided to go their separate ways in 2018 – and the reason why is enough to bring a tear to your eye.
Drawing on the experience of his own housing hardships to help those going through similar issues, Jonathan Scott became a well-known figure on our television screens. As one half of the Property Brothers duo, Scott came to prominence thanks to his uncanny real estate savvy – and he hasn’t looked back since.
From day one, Scott steered his career in an unorthodox fashion. Constantly teetering between different professions, the ambitious newcomer had one eye on the entertainment world and the other on the real estate business. Ultimately, it would be the latter that took center stage.
A true jack of all trades, Scott had his fingers in various pies during his formative years. Whether it was wowing audiences as a budding magician, or heading up his own independent film company, nothing seemed out of reach as he entered young adulthood. However, he soon had to think about his financial security.
Unwilling to risk joining the entertainment business for fear of being unemployed, Scott focused most of his energy on property development. During his time at university with his brother Drew, the pair would purchase a house, renovate it, and then sell it on for a profit.
Speaking with REM Online in 2011, Drew recalled, “Our agent said it couldn’t be done. We did it. We bought a $220,000 house and lived for a year rent-free and made $40,000 or $50,000 when we sold a year later.” Frustrated by real estate salespeople in the area, Drew added, “After continually being told by Realtors that it’s impossible to do certain investments, and then proving them wrong, we decided to license and do it ourselves.”
He and his brother’s hard work and determination paid off in the end, and it led to them landing their own television show, Property Brothers. And it proved to be the ideal vehicle for Scott to blend two of his biggest passions in life: entertainment and real estate development.
The show’s premise is centered on helping homebuyers find the right home, spruce it up to their liking, and do it all within their individual budgets. It gave the brothers the capacity to fully utilize their respective skills, and its success led to various other entertainment endeavors in film, books and radio.
Scott’s professional life was further complemented by his personal one in 2015 when he met blonde beauty Jacinta Kuznetsov. The two embarked on a serious relationship after first meeting at a charity event, and it was a relationship that Scott described as “truly special” as recently as 2017.
Scott didn’t shy away from showing off his new love interest either. He soon started sharing sweet Instagram posts of the two of them together, and he even found a way to incorporate Jacinta into his television work. The couple wound up living together and seemed to have a genuinely bright future ahead.
Scott told People in 2017, “We definitely want to get married and have kids, but we’re just finding joy in our relationship and still learning about each other as well. We’ve only been dating a year and a half, but I don’t think we’ll wait seven years like Drew did before we decide what we’re going to do.”
Sadly, though, the wait came to a premature end in 2018 when the two decided to go their separate ways. Nevertheless, both Scott and Kuznetsov are adamant they harbor no hard feelings or negative thoughts, despite the seemingly abrupt end to their relationship.
“When I met Jacinta in the fall of 2015, I met somebody kind and courageous and a champion for human/animal rights,” Scott said in a moving Instagram post in April 2018. “We grew to respect each other fiercely and know that will remain unchanged for the rest of our lives. Sometimes life takes you on unexpected paths and those paths aren’t always in the same direction.”
The real estate guru finished the touching dispatch with, “There’s no drama or negativity; no jealousy or hate. Not even sadness or sorrow. Our memories are filled with joy and we will continue to advocate for each other as friends wherever we go.” It was attached with a cute picture of the former couple petting some elephants.
In turn, Kuznetsov took to the social media site herself to address the situation. After retweeting Scott’s statement, Kuznetsov penned one of her own, saying, “An abundance of love for J has been a beautiful and rewarding time of my life. However, life is funny and sometimes chapters change and this one has.”
She continued, “We have deep love and respect for one another but have gone separate ways. I lovingly reflect on everything we accomplished together and am so proud of who he is and the love we gave each other.” Clearly, the feeling was mutual.
With a shot featuring Scott clad as the Grinch, the post finished with, “We will continue to be a part of each other’s lives as friends, and never stop planning what greatness we can create in this world. (Makeup by me, when I made him the Grinch).”
Moreover, it’s not the first time that Scott has been through heartbreak. In fact, he went through a period of similar emotional upheaval some years before meeting Kuznetsov. In 2007 Scott married a Westjet crew scheduler by the name of Kelsy Ully, but their relationship broke down amid a storm of acrimony.
The married couple filed for divorce in 2009, something that Scott puts down to immaturity and incompatibility. He told People in 2017, “I think that one of the biggest things I learned is that you can have two good people who are just not good for each other.”
Never one to stay stagnated, though, Scott is still well and truly focused on his career, paying particular attention to his and his brother’s entertainment production company. In 2017 the two siblings appeared in a five-episode series entitled Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House.
What’s more, Scott doesn’t appear to be slowing down in 2018 either, as he’s currently gearing up for the premiere of Property Brothers: Linda & Drew Say I Do in June. His latest relationship with Kuznetsov may have petered out in the end, but sometimes, things don’t work out as planned – no matter how good our intentions are.
