Hugh Jackman gushed about his time hanging out with Emily Blunt after the pair participated in Variety Studio: Actors On Actors together. And when the actress’ husband, John Krasinski, found out, he roasted Jackman on social media. Then Ryan Reynolds joined in too – with hilarious results.
As many social media users know, Hugh Jackman, 50, and Ryan Reynolds, 42, have an ongoing pretend feud. It all began after the two actors first got to know each other while working together on the 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Jackman portrayed the titular character, also known as Logan, and Reynolds appeared as Wade Wilson, a.k.a Deadpool.
And in the movie, Wolverine kills Wade Wilson in a move that comic fans widely reviled. So when Reynolds played a different incarnation of the same character in Deadpool, he wasted no time poking fun at his former co-star. For instance, Deadpool includes a scene where the anti-hero holds a mask of Jackman to his face and another that shows a copy of Jackman’s People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue.
The sequel, Deadpool 2, also features several references to Jackman and Wolverine. One scene, for example, shows Deadpool holding a music box with a figurine of Logan inside, while another shows Jackman’s character on a cereal box. A mid-credits scene even includes footage from X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
For his part, Jackman has also good-naturedly laid into Reynolds on several occasions. When Reynolds was getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for instance, Jackman shared a video to his Twitter page. In it, Jackman is holding a mask of his friend to his face while pretending to be the actor.
“How could a guy who failed his high school drama class be this talented? I have no answer to that,” Jackman teases in the clip. He also mentions that his “favorite actor in the world” is none other than “the great Australian Hugh Jackman.”
Over the past couple of years, then, the pair have rarely missed an opportunity to roast each other. So after Jackman shared a photo of himself posing with fans in Beijing, Reynolds teased that he was “pretty sure those are protestors.” And when John Krasinski, 39, called out Jackman for getting close to his wife, Reynolds soon got involved too.
But let’s set the scene. You see, Jackman and Emily Blunt, 35, took part in Variety Studio: Actors on Actors. The television specials feature conversations between Hollywood stars. And to promote their segment, the pair posed together on the red carpet for a November 17, 2018, event.
Afterwards, Jackman shared a photo of himself with Blunt to social media and declared that they’d had a great time together. “Had the pleasure of chatting with the amazing EMILY BLUNT today,” he wrote on Twitter. And before long, Krasinski joked that he was not happy about it.
So Krasinski posted another photo of Blunt with Jackman on the red carpet. But this time, it showed his wife laughing while Jackman appeared to be whispering in her ear. And the star of The Office joked that Jackman needed to back off.
“Eeeeeeasy Hugh… not sure this is what @Variety meant with #ActorsOnActors,” Krasinski wrote, before pretending that he wanted to fight Jackman. “Don’t make me think I can hurt you,” he added. And when Reynolds saw it, he chimed in with a hilarious comment too.
“This is a call to action,” Reynolds wrote. “This man must be stopped.” Yet when Jackman was asked about it the following day, he had the perfect response as well.
Jackman was attending the Santa Barbara Film Festival, where he was being honored with an award for excellence in the movies. And he used the opportunity to reignite the fake feud. “You gotta stay on your toes, John,” he said. “That’s all I’m saying.”
Then Jackman joked that he could take both Krasinski and Reynolds in a fight. “I’m fine to fight John, but he arrived this morning at my front door with Ryan,” he revealed. “I’m like, ‘Come on, guys. One at a time. Not together.’”
Jackman also had something to say about his reputation as being one of the nicest people in Hollywood. He even confessed that he is enjoying stirring up trouble. “I’m really creating all these feuds,” the star said. “This mister-nice-guy image is over.”
Naturally, social media users found the entire exchange hilarious. “Name a better trio. I’ll wait,” one Twitter user shared. Another wrote, “My day is just starting, and it’s already made.”
While it remains to be seen if Krasinski’s roast was a one-time thing or if he will continue to taunt Jackman, the Wolverine actor’s feud with Reynolds is far from dying down. In fact, Jackman has now “hit out” at the star once again. But this time, it was all for a good cause.
You see, a PG-13-rated version of Deadpool 2 called Once Upon A Deadpool was released in movie theaters from December 12 to December 14, 2018. Part of each ticket sale for the feature is promised to the charity F*** Cancer, which has temporarily been renamed Fudge Cancer. So Jackman shared a political-style advert to support the movie on social media – while simultaneously poking fun at Reynolds.
In the video, it is claimed that Reynolds has “been riding Jackman’s coattails since 2009” and was only made People’s Sexiest Man Alive after him. Jackman then adds that it’s important to go and see Once Upon A Deadpool. “Please do it or he might make another Van Wilder movie,” he says. “Or worse yet, Green Lantern.”
Although fans can’t get enough of Jackman and Reynolds’ banter, they seemingly won’t be seeing it on the big screen any time soon. The Australian actor has, after all, ruled out the possibility of a crossover between Deadpool and Wolverine. “Ryan is relentless,” he told People in November 2018. “He keeps coming back to me in all these ways, shapes and forms. I just said, ‘You know, I just don’t think the world really wants to see Deadpool with Wolverine.’”
