Chrissy Teigen Told Fans Her Tongue Was Falling Off, And It’s All Down To One Strange Habit

Author and model Chrissy Teigen often uses social media to keep her fans up to date. However, in August 2020 she shocked all by revealing that her tongue was “literally falling off” – with the photo to prove it. So how did this happen exactly? Well, it was the result of a bizarre new habit she’d picked up after falling pregnant with her third child.

Now, Teigen is well known for her openness. Harnessing social media, she often allows fans an insight into her daily family life with singer John Legend and their kids. But while the pair are one of Hollywood’s golden couples, their celebrity lifestyle isn’t always as glamorous as you might think.

Over the years Teigen has shared hilarious and candid updates on topics that other celebs might shy away from. And it seems that she is never more honest than when she’s pregnant. You see, some of the topics she’s covered have been her changing body, weight gain and the general trials and tribulations that come along with carrying a child.

So when Teigen and Legend announced that they were expecting their third child in August 2020, fans should have known to expect a number of searingly honest updates from the model. However, they could not have foreseen the painful tongue injury Teigen sustained as a result of an unusual habit.

Aside from Teigen’s pregnancy woes, the model’s life now is very different from what it once was before Hollywood royalty. Yes, while she may be a celebrity today, she comes from a fairly humble background. She was born to parents Ron and Vilailuck “Pepper” Teigen in Delta, Utah, on November 30, 1985.

The Teigen family – which also included Chrissy’s older half-sister Tina – later moved to Snohomish, Washington, where they ran a tavern known as Porky’s. And when Teigen was 15, her mother returned to her native Thailand to care for her parents. However, she wound up getting a job teaching English, keeping her away from her family for a longer time than expected.

Having their mother away from them was tough on Teigen and her sister. So to cheer them up, their father moved the family to Huntington Beach, California. And it was here that Teigen landed a job in a surf shop and was scouted as a model after a photographer asked her to take part in a bikini shoot.

Growing up, it seems that Teigen had had no desire for a life in the spotlight. In 2014 she told The Daily Beast website, “I always wanted to be a teacher or wanted to do something with food. But modeling, I just never thought I could do it myself really ever… I just never thought I was tall enough or skinny enough.”

Anyway, Teigen’s first proper shoot was for the brand, Billabong. And her pictures were later shown to Legend by a cameraman who was set to direct the video for the singer’s 2007 single “Stereo.” At this point, celebrity history was made.

You see, Teigen and Legend clearly hit things off on the set of the music video. And before long they were dating. Giving an insight into the early days of their romance, in 2019 Legend told Vanity Fair, “It got serious pretty quickly… She just entertained the hell out of me, texting me. What people respond to in her tweets today was the same energy in those texts.”

During this formative period of Teigen’s relationship with Legend, she’d spend six months of the year in Miami on modelling assignments. But the work was uninspiring and the model was often broke, so her musician boyfriend sometimes wired her money. He’d also take her to fancy hotels whenever he was in town.

But Teigen’s modeling career would soon take off. Yes, in 2010 she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, on the magazine’s iconic swimsuit issue. Plus, she was named as “Rookie of the Year” by the title. The gig marked a breakthrough moment for Teigen, and she has since appeared in a number of glossy publications.

And while Teigen’s career was going from strength to strength, so too was her relationship with Legend. You see, the couple got engaged in 2011, wedding two years later in an idyllic ceremony on Italy’s Lake Como. During the lavish nuptials, Teigen donned not one, but three Vera Wang gowns while Stevie Wonder serenaded the star-studded guestlist.

Alongside her marriage and modeling career, Teigen began indulging in her passion for food. Yes, in 2011 she started her “So Delushious” blog, using it to share recipes and voice her opinions. Revealing the inspiration behind the blog in 2012, Teigen told Marie Claire, “I always loved food and I think I kind of needed an outlet.”

Building on her passion, in 2016 Teigen released her cookbook Cravings: Recipes for All of the Food You Want to Eat. The recipes were inspired by her travels and heritage, with a focus on Thai and Norwegian influences she’d gained from her parents. And she didn’t skimp on the American classics either.

In fact, Cravings proved so popular that it became a best-seller. Not only that, but its success spawned a second book called, Cravings: Hungry for More, which was released in 2018. Furthermore, Teigen has launched her own Cravings cookware line which is available at Target.

So Teigen’s love of food is well documented, and her cravings have not been diminished by her pregnancies. You see, the model and her superstar husband announced they were expecting their first child in 2015. After battling fertility issues for years, they finally conceived with the help of in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Following that, Teigen would give birth to their first child, Luna Simone Stephens on April 14, 2016. However, during her pregnancy, the couple spoke openly about the mom-to-be’s cravings. Chatting to Entertainment Tonight in 2015, Legend revealed his wife was more into sweets than before, while Teigen took to Instagram to reveal her appreciation of the colorful cereal “Cap’n Pebbles.”

And Teigen was similarly open about her pregnancy cravings before welcoming her second child, Miles Theodore Stephens in 2018. In an interview with E! in 2018, the model revealed, “When I want something I must have that thing. I am crazy with cravings, I can’t tell [catering] what I want tomorrow, I need to tell them ten minutes before.”

Given the role food had played in her previous two pregnancies, it’s hardly surprising that Teigen started talking about cravings soon after announcing her third pregnancy in August 2020. The development had been alluded to in the video of Legend and Gary Clark Jr.’s single, “Wild.” But Teigen later took to social media to confirm the news.

In the video for “Wild,” Legend is seen placing his arms around his wife from behind, while she cradles her stomach lovingly. The scene caused widespread speculation that the couple were expecting once more. That was until Teigen stopped the rumor mill by posting a video of her bump on Twitter, in which she urged fans to “look at this third baby s***.”

Unlike Teigen’s previous two pregnancies – which came as a result of IVF – her third baby was a welcome surprise. In fact, the model had been unknowingly pregnant when she underwent surgery to have her breast implants removed in June 2020. A routine pregnancy test she took prior to the procedure had given a false negative.

That’s right, and Teigen revealed the saga on Twitter in August 2020. It was then that a fan asked if she was aware that she was expecting prior to having her breast implants removed. And to that, Teigen teased, “Oh, it’s quite a story. Lol” before revealing what had gone down.

In a series of tweets, Teigen wrote, “I did the routine pregnancy test you do before surgery. It said negative. It was not negative.” However, she later took another test, on June 19, 2020 – the same day Legend’s Bigger Love album came out. And this time, to the model’s shock and alarm – it was positive.

Disclosing how she discovered she was pregnant once more, Teigen wrote, “So the morning of John’s album release, he wakes up at 3:00 a.m. to do Good Morning America. I woke up with him and was like, ‘Man, [I] should take my monthly test to be disappointed…’ I was not disappointed. But I was scared sh**less.”

Revealing the source of her worry, Teigen continued, “[I] was pretty positive you shouldn’t get your boobs out while pregnant? Pretty sure.” With that in mind, the model said that she, “Prayed to the boob surgery gods that everything would be okay [and] went to every appointment terrified.”

Recalling her fertility issues, Teigen added, “Even without the surgery, I didn’t think I could get pregnant naturally anyway. So the odds just felt… bad.” She concluded on a more positive note, though, writing, “What they say so often can be true. When you give up on trying, life has a way of surprising you.” But, in a typically-Teigen fashion, she added, “In summary, my boobs hurt.”

However, it would seem that sore boobs weren’t to be Teigen’s only painful pregnancy woe, this time around. That’s because in August 2020 she took to Instagram Stories to reveal that her tongue was “literally falling off.” And it seems that the nasty sounding ailment was a direct result of an unusual craving.

Yes, during her third pregnancy Teigen had taken a major liking to sour candy. Giving fans a glimpse of the painful results of her craving, in her Instagram video she said, “Fair warning: Do not continue this video if you are squeamish. I told you I’m eating so much sour candy that my tongue is falling off, and it is.”

After opening her mouth to let viewers see the damage her latest pregnancy craving had caused, Teigen continued, “[It’s] literally falling off because I eat so much [sour candy] in the night,” She added, “I eat sour straws – I suck on them – and then after them I have my Blow Pops. And it’s just falling off, my tongue.”

Unfortunately, for foodie Tiegen, her tongue was so painful that she was finding it difficult to eat. She revealed, “I’m trying to eat my noodles, but it’s so painful. It’s hard to eat anything hot, spicy especially, but even just hot temperature. I don’t know how to eat it. I’m about to put Saran Wrap around my tongue or something, like a tongue condom of some sort.”

Interestingly, Teigen’s tongue video wasn’t the only time that she opened up about her sweet tooth. Earlier in August 2020 she’d told her Twitter followers that she was a “crazy candy freak.” Meanwhile, she also shared a video of a pack of Blow Pops she kept in easy reach on her nightstand.

Another snack that Teigen seemingly couldn’t get enough of was banana chips. Sharing the recipe that had fuelled her craving on Instagram in August 2020 she revealed, “Banana chips are the only semi-healthy thing I can consume right now. Well no, they aren’t BAD for you by any means, especially compared to what I WANT to eat. But man I can destroyyyyy handfuls of these in mere minutes.”

One more pregnancy craving that Teigen has revealed was a bit of a 1990s’ throwback. Posting on Instagram Stories in August 2020 she said that she’d been “crazy addicted” to “ham and cheddar Lunchables.” The model added, “I heat up each piece of the meat so I don’t get listeria – because you’re not supposed to have deli meat pregnant.”

It seems that Teigen might be putting her pregnancy cravings to good use, though, as she revealed in September 2020 that she was working on her third cookbook. Indeed, she told Twitter fans that she was once again collaborating with Adeena Sussman, as she’d done on the first two Cravings books.

Writing on Twitter, Teigen said she’d “officially started the cookbook!” And she added that the “first step” was “a Google Doc between” herself and Sussman “where at every hour of the day and night (she is in Tel Aviv!) ideas are popped into organized chaos.” Furthermore, the author gave an insight into the kinds of recipes the book might contain.

Yes, Teigen revealed that she and Sussman were “currently discussing the beauty that was the Mrs. Field’s White Choc Macadamia Nut Cookie.” The TV personality is hoping to incorporate more sweet recipes into her next cookbook this time around, in keeping with her current tastes. She explained, “My books always reflect the time they are made in.”

Revealing the evolution she’d undergone as a cookbook writer, Teigen explained that “the first [Cravings] book had no dessert” because she was “too scared.” Meanwhile, the second had a liiiiiittle [but she] didn’t have a passion for more than a handful of sweets.” The third installment, however, was to have even more sweet recipes, with Teigen teasing, “Oh there is dessert alright.”

But while Teigen seems excited to get back into the kitchen, the little one she’s carrying remains her number one priority. You see, in September 2020 she revealed she’d been placed on “official two week bed rest.” And the model also wrote on Instagram that she was “trying to be as healthy as possible.”

Teigen added, “It’s a bit of a difficult pregnancy. I feel good though… I will say I’m probably being punished for talking so much about how great the first two went. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, pregnancy’s awesome!’ But now I get it. I get anyone that thinks it’s not so awesome, but [I’m] very happy to be carrying this baby.”
