Chelsea Clinton was born on February 27, 1980, the only daughter of a political powerhouse. She was only 12 years old when her dad Bill Clinton was elected President, and she spent her teenage years growing up in the public eye in the world’s most famous house. And with her mom Hillary now running for President against Donald Trump, she’s back in the spotlight and helping to put her family back in the White House. There are some things, however, that neither mother nor daughter are ever likely to mention on the campaign trail…
20. She raked in $600,000 as an NBC apprentice
The Clintons’ only daughter came under fire when it was revealed that she earned a whopping $600,000 a year while working on NBC News’ Making A Difference between 2011 and 2014. And the salary was all the more outstanding given that Clinton was a new reporter with no previous experience. She eventually left the role after three years to focus on the Clinton Foundation.
19. She skipped third grade and had mastered the stock market by age 11
There’s no denying that Clinton was a clever kid: so clever, in fact, that she was able to jump ahead a full year at school. That’s right: she was found to be too smart for third grade, so she just went straight to fourth. Plus, by the age of 11, Chelsea had actually figured out how to work the stock market.
18. She was once big into vegetarianism but quit after 16 years
Clinton decided to quit meat after coming across an article in a life sciences class. She discovered that there were negative consequences to eating red meat in particular and embraced a rigid vegetarian lifestyle. But at 29 she finally caved in to her hunger for meat once more, much to her husband’s joy.
17. Her father installed a little desk in his White House office for her
Even though Bill and Hillary were busy during his presidency, they always tried to make time for their daughter. In fact, Bill went as far as to install a desk in his office so that Chelsea could sit with him when he had work to do. Plus, First Lady Hillary also made sure that she could spend time with her daughter when she got home from school.
16. The Secret Service guarded her during college
As the First Daughter of the United States, security necessarily had to be stricter for Clinton when she went off to college at Stanford. Indeed, unlike most college kids, Chelsea had undercover secret service agents to protect her. Plus, her windows were even bulletproof. We’d say that’s pretty impressive security.
15. She’s good pals with Ivanka Trump
Something that Hillary barely mentions during her presidential campaign is her daughter’s close friendship with the offspring of her rival. In fact, Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, has been pals with the former First Daughter for years. And while the presidential debates have caused bitterness between Hillary and Donald, Ivanka has nevertheless insisted that she and Chelsea are still good friends.
14. Her wedding cost a whopping $3 million
Clinton and her fiancé – hedge fund manager Marc Mezvinsky – tied the knot back in 2010 in front of 400 guests. The lavish ceremony took place at Astor Courts Estate, a 13,000-foot mansion, and reportedly cost a whopping $3 million. Clinton looked stunning in two Vera Wang gowns specially designed for the day. And her nine-tier cake would have amply fed all those guests.
13. She was embroiled in a paternity scandal
The Clintons are no strangers to scandal, but the family were still shaken to the core in 2014 when claims began to circulate that Bill wasn’t actually the father of Chelsea. According to reports, Webster Hubbell, a former law partner at a firm where Hillary once worked, was rumoured to be her biological dad.
12. She helped change her father’s views on gay marriage
In 1996 Bill Clinton put his name to legislation that stated that marriage was only between a man and a woman. Fast forward two decades, though, and now Bill’s views have completely changed – and it’s all thanks to his daughter. Clinton thinks that she helped challenge her dad’s views by bringing her LGBT pals to meet him and engaging him in some honest debate. Well played!
11. She completed college early
Finishing college early might seem impossible to some – but not to Chelsea Clinton. Indeed, the former First Daughter had all the credits she needed to finish her education at Stanford several months early. But instead of sitting back and relaxing, Clinton kept herself busy aiding her mom in her campaign for a seat in the Senate and accompanying her dad to state functions.
10. She came under fire for taking a private jet… to a clean energy roundtable
Chelsea came under fire in September 2016 for using a private jet to travel 330 miles to a clean energy roundtable organized by her mom’s campaign. In fact, the aim of the roundtable was to discuss how to tackle climate change; Chelsea was further criticized for using the jet because her mom had promised to lead a carbon-neutral campaign.
9. She accused her father’s aides of stealing funds
Clinton wasn’t immune to the 2016 Wikileaks release of emails: it emerged that she had suspected her father’s aides of thieving cash from her parents’ Clinton Foundation. In particular, one message expressed her concern that the aides were taking “significant sums of money.” And one of the accused, Doug Band, hit back at Clinton in another leaked email, calling her “a spoiled brat kid.” Ouch.
8. She called Bernie “President Sanders”… while campaigning for her mom
Slips of the tongue happen to the best of us, and Clinton isn’t immune to embarrassing gaffes. During the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate race, for example, Clinton mistakenly called her mom’s rival “President Sanders” in Minnesota. Luckily, she elicited some laughs from the audience and amended her mistake right away, saving herself any major embarrassment.
7. She learned to ignore lies about her parents at six
At the age of six, Clinton was taking part in her parents’ mock debates as her dad campaigned to be the governor of Arkansas. But the point of the exercise wasn’t just for her to practice her debating skills. In fact, the mock debates were also used to acclimatize the young Clinton to hearing falsities about her parents, preparing her as a result for future slur campaigns.
6. Her husband blew nearly $25 million on a gamble
Chelsea’s husband Marc Mezvinsky came under fire in May 2016 for blowing almost $25 million of investors’ money. In particular, he persuaded rich investors to take a risk on the Greek economy. And to make matters worse, some of those investors had contributed cash to either Bill or Hillary’s campaigns.
5. Her father-in-law is a convicted felon
Meeting the in-laws can be awkward, but it can be even more awkward when your father-in-law is a convicted felon. Indeed, Ed Mezvinsky went to jail for five years after committing fraud; Bill Clinton even denied him a presidential pardon for his crimes.
4. She’s involved in her mother’s email scandal
The scandal surrounding Hillary’s leaked emails has gone so far as to involve her daughter. Wikileaks managed to dig up 67 emails between Hillary and Chelsea in which Chelsea used the alias of Diane Reynolds. And the missives even included top-class information on the 2012 Benghazi terror attack, too.
3. She got involved in the Oscars race row
Not one to shy away from sharing her thoughts, Clinton accused Charlotte Rampling of being “outrageous, ignorant and offensive” when the actress downplayed the lack of nominees of color at the 2016 Oscars. Clinton aired her comments on Twitter, and they didn’t go down too well, with many users jumping to Rampling’s defense.
2. She splashed out $10 million on a New York apartment
After building a life for herself in New York, Clinton splashed out on a $10 million apartment off Madison Avenue and even employed a full-time doorman. She and her husband sold their previous $4 million apartment and moved into their luxurious new home in 2013.
1. She didn’t know her mom had pneumonia
During Hillary’s presidential campaign, concerns over her health reached a peak when it was discovered that the Democratic candidate had pneumonia. However, in an interview with Cosmopolitan, Clinton admitted that she had no idea her mom had pneumonia – because she didn’t tell her.
