A thief approached a family home, hoping not to be seen. But, unfortunately for them, there was a fearless nanny watching every move that they made. And within seconds the attempted theft had gone totally pear-shaped, with the nanny emerging as a modern-day hero.

Kate Anderson is a woman from Snohomish County, Washington. She’s a nanny who cares for a one-year-old boy, Desmond, for her boss, Tanya Smith. The two women have a relationship that’s based on more than just business. They’re friends, too.

And during a recent incident Anderson demonstrated her loyalty to Smith. She may have been employed as a nanny, but on the day in question, Anderson went far above and beyond her job description. What she did for her friend was nothing short of awesome, in fact.

It all happened on what had seemed like a perfectly normal day in November 2017. Anderson was inside the house looking after the baby, when a man approached the property. But it was just an Amazon delivery driver with a package for Smith.

He left the parcel outside the property, which wasn’t anything out of the ordinary for the Smith household. Indeed, Anderson subsequently told local news station KIRO 7 that the family received plenty of packages in the mail. But what happened next certainly wasn’t commonplace.

Only a few minutes after the Amazon delivery, Anderson noticed something unusual. The Smith household had CCTV cameras installed, and one of them picked up some movement in the street. A car was slowly pulling up to the house.

Looking through the window, Anderson could see that a woman had stepped out of the car. Strangely, the vehicle itself was still moving, with the passenger door hanging open. Meanwhile, the anonymous woman continued towards the front door of the house.

The woman was in a hurry. She certainly wasn’t casually walking towards the house, as you’d expect a normal visitor to do. That’s because she wasn’t a visitor at all. In fact, this woman was about to try to commit a crime in broad daylight.

When the stranger reached the front of the house, she didn’t ring the doorbell. And she clearly had no idea that Anderson was watching her every move. But when the woman bent down, Anderson knew in that very instant that something wrong was happening.

“I saw her bending and picking it [the package] up,” Anderson recalled. And that’s when she decided to act. Instead of retreating or calling the police, though, Anderson made the split-second decision to run out and confront the woman.

However, the stranger had already grabbed the parcel and was quickly hurrying back to the getaway car. Anderson yelled at the woman from the front door, asking her what on earth she thought she was doing. But the stranger didn’t stop.

The thief was already at the car, in fact, clutching the stolen parcel. But as she tried to step into the vehicle, the car pulled off. As a result, the woman fell to the ground dramatically. But the driver simply kept on going, leaving the thief lying in the street.

At this point, Anderson was sprinting out of the house shouting, “Why are you trying to steal?” But it was too late. The thief had managed to get the package into the car before it had pulled away. Although the parcel was gone, though, Anderson still wasn’t giving up.

The thief tried to stand up and run, but fell to the ground twice. From the Smiths’ CCTV footage, it appeared as though the woman might have injured her leg, causing her a little trouble as she tried to get to her feet. And soon enough, Anderson had a hold of her.

The two women subsequently tussled in the street. The thief desperately tried to slip out of Anderson’s grasp, but the nanny certainly wasn’t letting her go without a fight. She called out to a passer-by, asking him to call the police to the scene.

And within a few minutes, the cops were on the scene, where they arrested the woman. It turned out that she was a 29-year-old called Rhieanna Schindler who had outstanding warrants for other thefts, as well as for possession of drugs.

And even though it turned out that the package was only full of baby items intended for Desmond, Anderson said that she would react the same way if something similar happened in the future. “It’s just not OK to go around doing that. It’s so not OK with me,” she said.

As for Anderson’s boss, she was deeply impressed by her nanny’s actions that day. “It’s pretty amazing what she did, I’m very proud of her, and I’m not surprised,” Smith told KIRO 7. She was so grateful to Anderson, in fact, that she set up a GoFundMe page for her.

The original fundraising target was $200, so that Anderson could enjoy a fun night out as a reward for her bravery. But the request quickly went viral and raised more than $1,000. On the GoFundMe page, Smith described her friend as “a modern-day hero” who deserved a treat for her “admirable actions.”

And plenty of people agreed. One wrote, “Don’t know you. But you’re an amazingly loyal human being.” Someone even went as far as describing Anderson as “Supernanny.” And after hearing about this story, everyone is going to want Anderson to be their nanny. Or perhaps their security guard.
