Life hasn’t been easy for David Cochran. The Kansas City native didn’t have the best of starts, and before he was even a teenager he had experienced life in a school under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court. Crimes including theft and illegal substance abuse followed, leading to time behind bars between 2008 and 2015. But by January 2019 he had been clean for about three months. Even though he was living in his car, he was determined to turn his life around.

One day, he was afforded the perfect opportunity to put this new, positive outlook on life into practice. Driving on the highway during a blizzard, he saw another vehicle stranded in the snow by the side of the road. “I thought, ‘I just have to help him,’” he tells a reporter in a video posted on The Kansas City Star newspaper’s website later. The Good Samaritan pulled up and assisted the car by yanking it out. Remarkably, it wasn’t even the first time he had helped a car in trouble that day. “I pulled one guy out right before that,” he says.
