As Maria Holand Tøsse was about to enter the church, the camera started rolling. She had always wanted to do something special for her man on their wedding day, and now was her big chance. And what she did, in front of the entire wedding party, was extraordinary.
In August 2015 Norwegian woman Maria Holand Tøsse was set to marry her man, Ronny Eidsvik. And the ceremony they had planned can only be described as stunning. The reason that it was so special, though, was down to a spectacular series of surprises.
It was all captured on camera, too, and once the video was uploaded to YouTube, the footage quickly went viral. People had never seen a wedding video quite like it, after all, and the internet simply couldn’t get enough of it.
The best part about it could just be that you would never guess what was coming. And there’s no doubt that Ronny had no idea what was around the corner, either. That’s why Maria’s husband-to-be ended up in tears at the altar.
The video starts with a shot inside the church, where the couple’s friends and family are waiting for the bride to arrive. The elaborate wooden doors to the chapel then swing open to reveal Maria in a stunning bridal gown, arm in arm with her father, Charles.
As you might expect from a church wedding, the organist begins to play as Maria makes her way down the aisle. Next comes a shot of Ronny standing at the altar, smiling proudly at his bride-to-be. What happens after that, though, is anything but routine.
You see, only a few seconds into the organist’s piece, Maria does something totally unexpected. First, she pulls a microphone out from behind her back. Then she launches into a stunning performance that her wedding guests – and the man waiting at the altar – will surely never forget.
So as the bride brings the microphone up to her mouth, the organ music suddenly changes. Then she bursts into song, opening with the words, “When I am down and, oh, my soul, so weary.” Her voice is enough to send shivers down your spine.
It’s the bride’s moment to shine, and she does so in true style. Her groom, on the other hand, clearly has no idea what is happening. As the camera pans to him, he totally loses it. He admires his bride-to-be, and his eyes fill with tears.
She continues to proceed down the aisle, performing a heartfelt rendition of “You Raise Me Up.” The song was written by Irish-Norwegian act Secret Garden but has since been covered over a hundred times by artists ranging from Josh Groban to Westlife. And it’s an important song to the couple, according to the Daily Mail. It was Maria’s intention to dedicate the lyrics to the man who had always supported her.
In fact, the song is reportedly Ronny’s favorite, making the surprise even more poignant. But there was more to the performance than just Maria’s singular voice. She had also enlisted some help to make the moment extra special.
Yes, the bride had assembled a group of musicians and vocalists to join her. A total of 30 people supported her in her rendition of the song – and many of them were singing from a balcony placed high above the wedding guests.
But the best was yet to come. The footage reveals that once Maria has finished the first few verses, she hands the microphone over to her father, who proceeds to do something extremely moving. Indeed, the father of the bride opens his mouth to sing.
With his daughter to help him with his timing, he sings several lines that are not in the original version of the song. He begins, “And now it’s time to give away my daughter.” Meanwhile, Maria giggles as she watches Ronny’s reaction at the altar. He applauds his father-in-law-to-be.
“You know it’s hard, so please take care of her,” sings Maria’s father, before the bride takes the microphone back to finish the altered verse. She completes it, singing, “I know he will, he loves me more than ever, and now it’s time to finally say, ‘I do.’”
Following a rendition of the chorus, the bride finally joins her groom at the front of the church. After a spectacular start to the ceremony, they are ready to officially tie the knot. Given all this, it’s no surprise that the emotional footage took the internet by storm.
In fact, the YouTube video has attracted over 41 million views in total and plenty of comments. A large proportion of the comments were positive, of course, with people saying that the footage was “moving” and “beautiful.” But not everyone was convinced.
In fact, some people described the ceremony as being “cringeworthy.” But the public’s opinion wasn’t what really mattered. The groom loved it, according to Norwegian newspaper VG. “I am so touched,” Ronny said to the paper. “I know that Maria loves singing, but I didn’t even consider that this might happen.”
Given that his fiancée is a professional singer and once came third in the country’s popular TV talent show Idol, though, it perhaps wasn’t all that shocking. Nevertheless, Maria told the Daily Mail that Ronny was the one who had encouraged her to follow her singing dreams – which was why it had been a particularly personal moment for both of them.
Indeed, performing that particular song at their wedding was a perfect tribute to her husband. “Since I sing every day for others, I wanted to sing for the man who supports me every day,” she told HuffPost. “I feel so blessed that I found a man that builds me up.”
