After Police Got A Tip-Off About This Abandoned Shack, They Found A Traumatized Animal Trapped Inside

When police received an anonymous call reporting some concerning goings-on at an abandoned Texas shack, they were quick to act. When they got to the building, moreover, they found a traumatized creature trapped within. But later discoveries proved to be even more heartbreaking.

And Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue, based in Frisco, Texas, also helped the animal out. Specifically, the organization works to rescue and bring back to health horses that have had a rough start in life as well as finding them new homes. From abused to abandoned and neglected animals, the non-profit has seen it all.

What’s more, Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue president Sue Chapman has been saving animals for two decades now. It all began in 1997 when she found “Becky” – a starving horse covered in wounds that crawled with maggots. Becky’s home was a junkyard, and Chapman subsequently found out that her owner saw the creature as their “lawnmower.”

Chapman rescued the horse, however, and helped her regain her health. And from that moment on, Chapman had a new mission. “I just saw Becky, and it changed my life,” she told Dallas News in 2014.

Since then, Chapman and her team have dedicated their days to helping Texas’ most needy horses. And not only do they rescue animals, but they also teach people about looking after their equine friends. However, it appears that there are still many who need to take their message on board.

In September 2017, for instance, a team from Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue attended to one of the organization’s most heartbreaking cases to date. It all began with an urgent midnight call from the Dallas Police Department; it had received an anonymous tip-off about a horse in desperate need of help.

So, with no time to lose, rescuers hurried 32 miles through the night to get to the scene. When they arrived, moreover, they were greeted by two animal control officers who explained what they had uncovered. However, perhaps nothing would have prepared the team for the scene that they were about to be confronted with.

Two horses – a 28-year-old mare and her young foal – had been living in despicable conditions, locked inside a dirty, rundown shack with nothing to eat or drink. Sadly, though, that was just the beginning of what the rescuers saw of the poor animals’ suffering.

As the team got closer, they found the momma horse lying on the ground with her baby standing beside her. Tragically, the mare was barely skin and bones. But the rescuers were too late to save her: she was already dead.

Naturally, this was a truly heartbreaking discovery for all those involved. “The mom had died a few days before,” Sarah McGregor, spokesperson for Becky’s Hope, told The Dodo in September 2017. “Who really knows how long they had been there?”

However, the team wasted no time getting the filly back to their rescue. And once there, they could assess the emotional damage the animal had sustained in her short life, as the impact of the tough time that the foal had had was clear to see.

“We named her Silvie. She is gorgeous with huge eyes that pull at your heart,” read a September 2017 post on Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue’s Facebook page. It continued, “Silvie longs for her mother and is obviously uncertain. It will take some time to win this little girl’s trust, but now she is safe and she is loved.”

And Silvie’s story outraged many of the rescue’s followers on Facebook. “Bless Silvie and her dear mama in heaven,” read one comment. “How sad and cruel. So glad you were able to get Silvie out of there. Hope they catch those devils who did such an evil thing to this poor baby and mom.”

Then, as Silvie settled into her new life at the shelter, police got to work investigating her harrowing case. In particular, they were keen to find out who had left the horses uncared for. However, for those at Becky’s Hope, their main priority was to give Silvie a sense of security.

And slowly but surely, the young horse learned to put her trust in the humans around her. Just two weeks after her rescue, in fact, Silvie began to let the team touch and pet her. “Every day that goes by, she’s gaining confidence,” read an update on Facebook. “She’s a beautiful girl… that’s for sure.”

Eventually, Silvie even made friends with another young horse named Cherry. Cherry was born at the facility after her mom Hope’s rescue. And the experts at Becky’s Rescue were hopeful that another energetic foal would have a great influence on Silvie.

Fortunately, that seemed to be the case, as a video of the young pair shows them frolicking in a field alongside Cherry’s mom, Hope. Indeed, judging by that footage, it appeared as if Silvie was finally managing to put her ordeal behind her. And the rescue staff enjoyed watching the young horse rediscover her love for life.

“Silvie is no longer alone so now her broken heart will start to mend,” read the accompanying caption to the video. “The vet assures us that this little thoroughbred filly is remarkably healthy considering her mom died of starvation two days ago. RIP Mama. She made sure her baby lived. Love does conquer all!”

As the weeks passed, moreover, Silvie continued to grow in confidence. “A month ago, Silvie wouldn’t let anyone touch her. Now she loves the attention,” read a positive update on the Becky’s Hope Facebook page in October 2017.

Sadly, Silvie isn’t the first horse to suffer at the hands of humans – and she probably won’t be the last. But, luckily, the equines of Texas have the dedicated team at Becky’s Hope Horse Rescue looking out for them. “We never know when we will receive a call for rescue and where that call will take us. We do know that we will do whatever it takes to help,” the organization vowed on Facebook.
