Thanks to roles in movies such as Private Benjamin, Overboard and Death Becomes Her, Goldie Hawn became one of the most popular Hollywood actresses of the late 20th Century. But how much do you really know about the Oscar winner? Well, these 20 Hawn facts may come as a surprise – even to the most devoted fans.

20. Her brother died before she was born
Goldie Hawn was born in 1945 to a mother who ran a dance school and a musician father who was a regular performer in bands across the future actress’ hometown of Washington, D.C. And she was the third child in the family, as her sister Patti had arrived seven years previously. Her brother Edward Jr., meanwhile, was born in 1937, but Hawn never met him as he tragically passed away in infancy.

19. She’s named after her great-aunt
Goldie Hawn may sound like the kind of stage name that an aspiring star would adopt on her way to chasing their Hollywood dream. It’s totally the Oscar winner’s real name, though. Hawn was given the moniker “Goldie” in tribute to her mother’s aunt, as the star revealed during her 2008 appearance on Inside the Actors Studio.
